Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter collapsed backstage following his headlining performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, new details have emerged regarding a brutal lyrical attack from Drake that preceded the event. The incident occurred after the 56-year-old rap mogul broke a six-year hiatus from solo concert performances, delivering a four-minute a cappella freestyle at Belmont Plateau that targeted multiple figures in the music industry. According to reports, Jay-Z opened his set with the track “Hovi Baby” before transitioning into the diss-filled freestyle, which was aimed at Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Dame Dash, and singer Jaguar Wright.

The freestyle was a direct response to Drake’s recent track “Janice STFU,” on which Drake rapped the line “the jig is up” in reference to Jay-Z. Jay-Z fired back with the bar, “The jig is up and I’m up 10. Wrong chart champ. Nas looked up to Hov. I never looked up to them,” addressing Drake’s recent milestone of surpassing Jay-Z as the male soloist with the most chart-topping albums. The performance also included references to Drake breaking Jay-Z’s Billboard record and a pointed business indictment, with Jay-Z rapping, “Them crackers got your publishing, gangster. Go talk tough to them. Don’t talk success to me.”

The relationship between Jay-Z and Drake, which began with collaborations on “Off That” and “Light Up,” has evolved into an on-again, off-again battle of words over the years. Drake’s triple album drop, “Iceman,” released on May 15, 2026, included multiple diss tracks targeting Jay-Z, such as “Janice STFU,” “Whisper My Name,” and “Make Them Pay.” On “Whisper My Name,” Drake rapped, “I’ll take $500,000, not the dinner. I never could learn s— from none of y’all,” a reference to the internet meme about choosing between cash or dinner with Jay-Z. The disses suggested Drake felt abandoned by the Roc Nation founder during his feud with Kendrick Lamar.

The performance also arrived during a period of intense legal and financial pressure for Jay-Z. He has been pursuing legal action against attorney Tony Buzbee, who accused Carter of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old alongside Diddy at an MTV Video Music Awards after-party in 2000. A defamation lawsuit against Buzbee and Jane Doe, amended in 2025, revealed a $190 million loss in income, credit, and loans, including a denied $55 million personal credit line and a denied $115 million loan for Roc Nation. The Jane Doe case was dismissed in February after the alleged victim withdrew her lawsuit with prejudice, following admitted inconsistencies in her story.

Following the diss-filled freestyle, Jay-Z launched into a 31-song career-spanning setlist, bringing out Meek Mill, Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal, and a reunited State Property. The lyrics from the freestyle immediately fueled debate throughout rap media, with some listeners viewing them as a calculated response to Drake’s commercial dominance, while others saw them as a reminder that Jay-Z measures success differently. Drake has not yet responded directly in verse, and representatives for Drake, Kanye West, and Nicki Minaj have not commented. Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic appearance served as a precursor to his “Reasonable Doubt” and “Blueprint” anniversary shows set for New York’s Yankee Stadium.
